Free electronic recycling event for Clinton Township residents

CLINTON TOWNSHIP – Clinton Township residents will soon have an opportunity to clear their attics and basements of old computers, televisions, and other electronic devices that take up valuable space and can be a problem to dispose of properly.

On Saturday, Sept. 30, from 9 a.m. to noon, the Township will hold an electronics recycling event in the Clinton Township Civic Center parking lot.

“It’s a free event for our residents to get rid of their old electronic products safely,” said Township Supervisor Bob Cannon. “We offer curbside service, which means you stay in your car, but you’ll need to roll down your window to show identification proving you are a Clinton Township resident,” he said.

According to the Michigan Department of Environmental, Great Lakes and Energy (EGLE), one of the best reasons to hold an electronic waste collection event is to protect the environment. Some electronic devices can contain toxins like lead, cadmium, and mercury – all considered hazardous. Also, electronic waste is full of precious metals and materials that can be recycled and used again.

Acceptable e-waste includes almost anything with a power cord that isn’t on the EGLE’s unacceptable list. Allowable items for drop-off include computers, printers, cell phones, home phones, radios, stereo systems, CD players, TVs, DVDs, Blu-ray players, fax machines, photocopiers, typewriters, word processors, and game consoles.

Unacceptable items include latex and oil-based paint, explosives, flares, fireworks, weapons and ammunition, radioactive waste, industrial and commercial waste, compressed gas cylinders, trash, tires, yard waste, appliances, Freon-containing items, medications, and syringes.

EGLE recommends completely deleting the data on your old computer and other electronic devices before recycling. For tips on deletion, contact a local computer repair center.
